A short history of Blue Electric Sun

Gert-Jan van der Hout and Boudewijn van der Lecq have been working together since the early nineties. They first played together in Malewi’s a Gogo, who played a lot in Leiden. With their follow-up band The Naked Lunch they recorded an EP that got some attention on MTV. During the recording of what was to be The Naked Lunch’s first album the band split up. Gert-Jan and Boudewijn formed a new band and much of the material that was written then was eventually recorded for Under Current, the first album released by the duo under the name Number Nine.

Under Current got some good reviews in the Dutch and British music press, but airplay was limited. Number Nine never really split and Boudewijn moved on to play in Oceandrive. Oceandrive’s debut EP West Pier was co-produced by Gert-Jan and received serious airplay on Dutch radio, got excellent reviews in the Dutch music press and earned the band two minor hits in the Dutch top 40. Oceandrive played some radio and television shows and recorded a 2 Meter Session.  A few years after Boudewijn left Oceandrive he and Gert-Jan got together again for the re-release of Under Current, now naming themselves Blue Electric Sun. With a lot of new songs in their bag they decided to record a second album in the autumn of 2019 and the spring of 2020. Ghost Radio Songs was released in the late summer of 2020.
